Our Planet Situation
Negative situation with the contamination in our planet:
Air pollution, climate change, soil and water contamination…
Poor waste management contributes to climate change and air pollution, and directly affects many ecosystems and species.
Plastic pollution is a widespread problem affecting the marine environment. It threatens ocean health, the health of marine species, food safety and quality, human health, coastal tourism, and contributes to climate change.
What we do at Latin House to reduce plastic:
Latin House helping to save the planet.
Plastic straws break down into smaller pieces, called microplastics, and get trapped in these sheltering seaweed mats. Hatchlings eat the microplastics that settle on the mats and their tiny stomachs fill up with the plastic.
We have made the change from plastic single use straws to edible straws that are not only make your drink extra delicious but help our environment and sea life too.
Plastic cutlery, whose use is widespread, will take up to hundreds of years to decompose, for example plastic spoons and forks will take around 400 years.
At Latin House we have stopped using plastic cutlery and brought in ecological disposable cutlery. CPLA and RCPLA cutlery are made of bioplastics that are obtained from corn starch, potato starch or other plants making these products sustainable and earth friendly.
At Latin House we also use biodegradable containers for all our takeaway dishes.
Biodegradable plastic takes 6 years and sometimes even months depending on its manufacture to decompose (compared to 400 years from regular plastic), which is why it is an alternative to sustainable plastic. It is 100% BPA free, 100% Reusable and 100% Recyclable.
We use Ecobags, Ecobags are not only made of recycled material that would of otherwise have be going to waste, they also eliminate the need for single-use plastic bags that have proven to harm the environment. Made from petroleum, plastic bags fuel extraction of fossil resources. They also present a serious disposal problem.
We are actively recycling in conjunction with our Local Council which is ‘Southwark Council’.
At Latin House aim to be 99% plastic free by March 2024.
What chemicals do plastics contain?
The chemicals in plastic put our health at risk. Almost all plastics derive from fossil fuels, especially natural gas. Many of the largest and most hazardous chemical families, including heavy metals, flame retardants, phthalates, bisphenols, and fluorinated compounds are directly associated with plastics production.
The most famous toxic chemical in plastics is Bisphenol-A, or BPA, which is a hormone disruptor linked to a whole host of health problems.
At Latin House, we reuse all our decorations for festive events such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Halloween, New Year decorations… So, we can reduce the production of plastics around the planet.
Our Bar and our walls are made of 95% recyclable material. We collected the pallets that were going to be thrown away and made the most of them by using them on the walls and bar at Latin House.

We avoid painting walls since they have certain chemicals that contaminate.
The plastic paints most used for painting usually contain, for the most part, heavy metals, formaldehyde and Volatile Organic Components (VOCs), which are polluting substances and very harmful to humans.
Our tables are 95% recyclable.
We use recycled wood and resin, and we also recycle bottle caps and paper bills.
What we do at Latin house with our Cooking Oil?
Cooking oil is very harmful due to it contaminating water and land, destroying future and existing food supplies, producing rancid odors, clogging water treatment plants, and catching fire when ignition sources are present as well as forming products that linger in the environment for many years.
At Latin House we recycle all our used cooking oil with a local Company. This helps to have a positive impact on ecosystems and infrastructure.
What we do at Latin house with the Noise Pollution?
We Reduce Noise pollution by turning off music appliances when there are not costumers at the restaurant, and Kitchen equipment when not in use, lowering the noise pollution.
We maintain and service our kitchen extractor every 3 months and we use it at 23% of its capacity making sure that our chefs and kitchen staff are in a safe environment to avoid noise pollution in our community and neighbourhood.
We use our music at 55 dB to avoid noise pollution and thus help our clients reduce noise-induced hearing loss.
